Hey, I'm Luisa

My ceramics are shaped by the thousands of hours I’ve spent exploring the world’s oceans as a scuba diver.

Each unique environment and every encounter with wildlife inspires the shapes, hues and textures of my work. The megafauna of Australia’s Ningaloo Reef; the kaleidoscopic critters of North Sulawesi’s Lembeh Strait; the deep blues and shark-laden waters of Fuvahmulah; the labyrinthine coral gardens of the Red Sea.

My pottery journey began on a kickwheel in South Sinai, Egypt, and took me to the foothills of the Himalayas in India. I’m now located in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the Atlantic coastline and rugged sand dunes inspire much of my work.

Each piece begins with research — a memorable dive, a sketch made in a notebook, a photograph of light bending through a reef. That image becomes a texture pressed into clay; a unique glaze colour chased across firing after firing. Each form, each glaze, can be traced to a specific dive.

I work primarily with stoneware, creating glazes that carry the muted blues, seagrass greens, and sandy ochres of coastlines I know well.

If a piece finds its way into your home or business, I hope it carries the particular stillness you find both near to and under the surface.

I owe my deepest artistic inspiration to the reefs, wildlife, and coastal communities that share these shores.
